Vintage Toys: Martin Klasch

A stitch embellishes, a stitch joins parts, a stitch can heal, a stitch can mend, a stitch in time saves nine.

After the Stitch workshop (images in prev post) I was inspired to do further research into this area a I felt it quite relevant to my project. Sewing parts together that have been ripped apart incorporates that element of mending a favourite item that you just cant throw away, but also lends a charm to an object despite the fact it is in a state of disrepair. The stitches show the imperfection, and the lines that can be produced using free machine stitching are also irregular and appealing.

Jan Mortimer

"I specialise in textural mixed media techniques, enjoy working with colour and dye most of my fabric and threads. I use a combination of hand and machine stitching and frequently incorporate selective memorabilia from my travels.
The inspiration for my current project is based on my collection of jugs and the memories of family and places that these evoke"

i like Mortimers work because the lines do seem very irregular and pleasing in a childlike sort of way. the colours are quite a lot bolder than the colour scheme i would wish to use in my project but the line work is very expressive and the drawings look observational which adds another layer of irregularity to them.

Veronica Broadley

Broadley's work is beautiful; she is not restrict just to the 2dimensional image but makes use of 3d textures and effects that ripped and torn material can produce. the shape of the fan is almost semi 2d; has just been folded. perhaps i should try doing this to some of my stitch-work. I am definitely interested in approaching my project from a more 3d and textural angle, something which could then be flattened again by digital collage.

Elif Soyer

This was from an exhibition at Kingston Gallery called "palpable mass" in which the artist made use of old bits of clothing/furniture and turned them into very touchable objects. these shapes are familiar, irregular, and beautiful.

Stitch workshop products :)

These imaged were taken by my I phone from my sketchbook. that's why the light is poor. I worked into the collages that you can see on previous posts. I think I need to add text perhaps. perhaps from the typewriter

Messy sheets

casually creating fine art as I was tidying the house. made a spectacle of some sheets, the light makes them look very beautiful even though they need to be washed.
